What is DNS? Why shouldn't I tamper with it? What happens at every modification?
DNS (Domain Name System) is a service which takes care of translating the domainname, e.g.
www.domena.tld
, to the IP address, e.g.
195.39.35.20
.
Each change spreads in a cascade, starting inside PIPNI, proliferating to the neighboring servers and their neighbors and so on and so forth. Because of that it is desirable that DNS modifications are done by an experienced person, because a mistake may be discovered very late and the same long time is necessary to recover from the ill state.
Every change requires a certain amount of time. This time usually doesn't exceed 24 hours, but it may be much longer (e.g. in the case of a great TTL). It is necessary to realize possible consequences while transferring a domain, changing the hosting program or merely editing DNS records etc. These actions may trigger outages or inaccessibility before the change spreads.
